Join UEDA’s Place Affinity Network meeting to hear from two speakers from UK Innovate at the University of Kentucky Research: Landon Borders, Executive Director of Innovation Connect and Senior Associate Director of Innovation Economic Development and Industry Partnerships; and Ian McClure, Associate Vice President for Research, Innovation and Economic Impact.

Landon and Ian will discuss how federal funding priorities are influencing place-based regional economic development and opportunities to build ecosystems, including infrastructure and industry partnering, and other place-based investments trends that can create new opportunities for translational programming and space needs.

 

Meet the Presenters:

Bio: Landon Borders is Senior Associate Director for Innovation Economic Development and Industry Partnerships for UK Innovate and Executive Director of Innovation Connect, UK Innovate’s industry partnership program for UK Research at the University of Kentucky. He leads efforts to support industry partnerships and economic development objectives for research and innovation at UK, including in alignment with Kentucky’s priority industries as well as UK’s Research Priority areas.

For over twenty years, Landon has been a leading innovator of new products and technologies that have made a lasting impact on Kentucky industries. Previously, he was the Director of Product Development at Bullard with responsibility for global patent portfolio, technology development and new product introductions leading multi-discipline design and engineering teams across the globe. Prior to Bullard, Landon worked at Big Ass Fans and Lexmark International where he developed and commercialized internet-connected devices, software solutions and imaging systems in various roles. Landon has served on the Advisory Board for Launch Blue, as Board Director for Thread Group, The Connected Lighting Alliance and JSRDF, and is a proud graduate of UK with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.

 

Bio: Ian McClure is the Associate Vice President for Research (AVPR), Innovation and Economic Impact for UK Innovate at the University of Kentucky (UK), where he leads efforts to translate UK discoveries for the public good, seek equitable returns on UK intellectual property (IP), enhance UK’s investments in innovation, catalyze a culture and capacity for entrepreneurship, and expand industry and other collaborative research partnerships.

Ian’s portfolio includes oversight of the UK Office of Technology Commercialization (UK OTC), UK Innovation Connect for industry partnerships, UK Innovation Economic Development and UK’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training. As UK OTC’s previous executive director, he oversaw a team of 25+ staff managing the university’s IP, licensing and startup portfolios. Under his oversight, UK OTC increased its commercialization metrics by up to 400%. Ian is the past Chair of the Board of Directors for AUTM and a member of Advisory Board of the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation, Launch Blue Accelerator, the Oak Ridge Innovation Institute, and Level Set Capital. In 2022, Ian was appointed by Department of Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo to the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (NACIE). As an innovator, Ian is a principal investigator or co-investigator on five federal grants focused on tech-based economic development (NIH, NSF, & EDA).
