IEP University Designation

The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and the University Economic Development Association (UEDA) are pleased to announce IEP Universities Designation, via UEDA+.

About the Innovation & Economic Prosperity Universities

APLU established the Innovation and Economic Prosperity (IEP) Universities program to recognize institutions that are exemplary in their contributions to regional economic development through their work in economic engagement. Economic engagement holistically encompasses university efforts promoting faculty/student innovation and entrepreneurship, excellence in technology transfer, contributing to talent and workforce development, establishing strong government-university-industry partnerships, and fostering community and “place” development through public service, engagement and outreach.

More than 55 institutions have received the IEP University designation. Participating institutions complete a rigorous self-study of their economic engagement enterprise and earn the IEP University designation if enough benchmarks are met.

Once designated, institutions continue to learn and benefit from the program through the IEP Learning Exchange. Designated institutions are considered for special opportunities and events including national and international speaking engagements, tours of federal agencies/national organizations and other initiatives undertaken by APLU and partner organizations to advance and elevate the profile university economic engagement.

What’s Different?

Access. As a result of a new partnership between APLU and UEDA, all UEDA member campuses who are not members of APLU are now able to participate in the IEP Universities Program–the same program APLU has implemented since 2013. Through UEDA+, all institutions of higher education ranging from private research universities to community colleges are eligible to pursue the IEP Universities Designation and engage with the IEP university community.
