Information Virginia Tech’s Office of Economic Development (OED) is seeking a senior specialist with broad interests in economic development planning and applied research. OED, which includes a US Economic Development Administration-funded university center, provides leadership for the university and the Commonwealth on a range of economic development and community economic development topics. Much of the current work of the office is driven by issues of regional concern in technology-based economic development and at the intersection of workforce and economic development. The activities of OED are described further at www.econdev.vt.edu.In this position an individual will have an opportunity to shape their own applied research agenda. The senior specialist will develop and conduct their own applied research and technical assistance projects and provide leadership for the office on the collaborative design and implementation of projects. OED has strong ties to a number of academic units across the university, including urban affairs and planning. The office’s faculty members teach and engage with students on a regular basis. OED’s work has also led to both professional and academic publications. This position, reporting to the director of the office, is an administrative and professional faculty appointment. A background in economic development planning or applied economics, along with some direct experience in working with external partners, would be very appropriate.
